The Waterberg area, a true Gem of Africa, is located in the
central and western parts of Limpopo Province. With most lodges in this area
only a 3-hour approximate drive from Johannesburg, it is a popular weekend
getaway destination. The Waterberg Mountains, just outside Bela-Bela
(Warmbaths), are well-known for being the backdrop to some of South Africa's top
game reserves.
The Welgevonden is home to over 50 different
mammals, including the Big Five, and boasts
one of the largest populations of white
rhino on a private reserve anywhere in
Africa. There are rare and unusual species
too, such as brown hyena, aardwolf and
aardvard - all best seen at night. The
grassy plains abound with antelope and
cheetah, lion and leopard are always close
by. It is the diversity of habitat on the
reserve that encourages such a wide range of
wildlife as well as over 300 bird species,
including the rare blue crane. No private
vehilcles are permitted in the reserve and
gameviewing in the lodges 4x4 vehicles, with
your experienced ranger, is always upclose
and personal.
The Waterberg
district, with its many private game lodges,
has been a well-kept secret for a long time,
but is fast becoming the destination of
preference for local and International
guests.
